The short answer
Which credential should a finance student pursue first?
Start with the work you want to do. CPA is a state license closely tied to accounting and assurance. CFA is an investment-focused professional designation. MBA is a graduate degree with a broader management and recruiting purpose. None guarantees a job, and they are not interchangeable.
Match the credential to the work
The career fit below is practical guidance, not a hiring rule. Read actual job descriptions, talk to alumni and compare the cost with the access, skills and recruiting opportunities a program provides.
| Path | Especially relevant to | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| CPA license | Audit, tax, accounting advisory, controllership; useful in financial diligence. | State education and experience requirements, the Uniform CPA Exam and licensing approval. |
| CFA charter | Investment research, asset/portfolio management and some wealth, hedge fund and valuation roles. | Three exam levels, required practical skills modules, qualifying experience and membership. |
| MBA degree | Management, consulting, corporate finance and structured career changes; some banking recruiting paths. | An admitted graduate program, coursework, tuition and program-specific recruiting access. |

California CPA: plan around the 2027 transition
As of this guide’s October 2026 review, California’s existing licensing pathway includes 150 semester units and specified coursework. Beginning January 1, 2027, a new pathway pairs a bachelor’s degree and an accounting concentration with a generally longer experience requirement. The Board describes the concentration as 24 accounting, 24 business and 3 ethics semester units, with specific rules and approved reductions in experience.
The legacy and new licensing pathways coexist during 2027 and 2028; the legacy pathway ends December 31, 2028. Exam eligibility and license eligibility are separate. Match the official rules to when you apply, and have your coursework evaluated rather than assuming any master’s degree or certificate satisfies the requirements.

Where CFA helps, including banking and hedge funds
CFA training covers investment analysis and portfolio management, so it can be relevant to equity research, portfolio roles, some hedge fund strategies, investment-oriented wealth management, valuation and aspects of investment banking. It is not generally the standard entry license or a universal prerequisite for banking, private equity or venture capital. Modeling, accounting, internships and recruiting preparation still matter.
Passing exams alone does not make someone a charterholder. CFA Institute requires completion of the program, qualifying experience of at least 4,000 hours over a minimum of 36 months, and membership requirements. Check the current enrollment and practical-skills requirements before registering.

What about SIE, Series exams and other degrees?
The SIE introduces securities-industry knowledge and can be taken without a sponsoring firm. Passing it does not authorize securities activity. Representative-level exams and registration depend on the role and generally require firm association. Match exams such as Series 7 or 79 to the employer’s actual registration requirements.
A specialized master’s in accounting, finance or business analytics can fill a specific skills or recruiting need. A JD is a law degree; legal practice has separate licensing requirements. A DBA is a business doctorate with an applied research focus, not a standard prerequisite for an entry finance job. For commercial real estate, explore ARGUS training and relevant licensing alongside internships and underwriting work.

A better next step than collecting acronyms
Choose two target roles. Find three current job postings for each, identify repeated skills and credential requirements, and speak with an alum or practitioner. Then build one relevant work sample: a financial statement analysis, a property underwriting model, a valuation or a documented accounting memo.

Common questions
A few useful clarifications
Should I get the CFA for investment banking?
It can strengthen investment and valuation knowledge, but it is not generally a required route into banking. Prioritize the recruiting calendar, accounting, valuation, modeling, internships and networking for your target employers.
Does California always require 150 units for a CPA?
The legacy pathway does, but a new pathway begins January 1, 2027. Both are available in 2027–2028. Check current Board rules, coursework and experience requirements for your application date.
Will an MBA increase my salary?
There is no guaranteed increase. Compare a specific program’s cost, time away from work, placement results, geography and recruiting access with your target transition. Average graduate outcomes are not a personal forecast.
